Dental scaling and root planing procedure explanation?

Last week I had "deep cleaning" done. Or at least the doctor said so. The procedure for two quads took about 15-20 min. They didn't give me any anestetic but it didn't feel that bad. Only it wasn't any difference from the regular cleaning (or at least I didn't feel it). When I asked about it the doctor (actually hygienist) she said "oh you'll feel it after we are done.".. but we were done with 2quads. She is going to do 2 more.

My question. Is there any difference between regular prophylaxis and scaling and planing that the patient actually can feel. From what I read about scaling it seems to be. I just don't want to be scamed

Dental scaling and root planing procedure explanation?
Hi! I'm reluctant to counter with what I want to say. I've been in dentistry for 25 years and when we do a deep cleaning, you will need to be numb. AND if better be more than 15-20 minutes of I'm getting a new hygienist.

All cleanings include scaling and removal of any type of build-up and plaque under the gums. The second part is flossing and then a good solid polish. A final check to be sure is all okay and that is a simple cleaning that should take at least 30-40 minutes.

A DEEP scaling and and curettage should take about 20 minutes per a quadrant at least. This has to be checked twice to be sure after the bleeding stops and the gums relax, there is no more diseased tissure or calculus. Then I have my hygients gently syringe the areas with a perioxide wash to clean and be sure the area is completely sterile. Then I check it to be sure. For the extra monies, you better get extra good care. I find that this could be done without a shot and I don't have any patients I would do this to. IF you need a deep cleaning, it means just that, and it can hurt in areas where the gum is swollen and has diseased tissue. I think you need a heart to heart with your dentist. If you have pockets of 5, 7. 9 or more. YOU CAN NOT get a right deep curettage without medication to numb the pockets and pull out the diseased tissue. The reason this is done is to TRY to PREVENT very costly periodontal surgery. So, have it redone, take the pocket measurement in 3 weeks and their better be a nice health change. This means you must brush, deep gently flossing and a periodontal mouth rinse once after breakfast and right before bed. If you have any other questions, please ask, I will help in any way that I can. Marie
Reply:Prophylaxis means prevention. It is just a polish on the teeth to get rid of plaque and stains. Scaling and planing actually get rid of the calculus that hardens on the teeth above and below the gum line. Prophylaxis mainly is above the gum line. If you have tarter under the gum line, if it's bad, you need scaling and root planing.
Reply:having a "deep cleaning" means getting you numb, because the Dr. has to go under your gum line and prophylaxis is above your gum line and it also includes polishing your teeth.
