Can recent dental work cause an "irreversibly inflamed nerve"?

I had my wisdom teeth out and 3 cavities filled recently. Two days later a tooth that had no dental work done to it started to hurt when in contact with something hot or cold. This pain has persisted for two weeks and lasts for up to an hour after the pain begins. I made an appointment to see the dentist again to check on this. I was told by the dentist that in that tooth I have an irreversibly inflamed nerve, but he also said that he can find no reason for this. There is no cavity or decay. He said himself that this was very strange. Is it coincidence that this pain started right after dental work or could something the dentist did during the extraction procedure have caused this?

did you extract all of your wisdom teeth? which tooth you had filling on and which tooth is hurting right now?
