Dental question: What is "scaling"? Who would need this procedure? Is it painful?

The procedure is called scaling and root planning. There are specific instuments that are used to clean the teeth underneath the gum line. People who need this procedure done are those who have periodontal disease and who have a lot of tarter build up on the roots of their teeth. This procedure helps get the tarter off reducing the disease and helps the gums get back to healthy. If you have been told you need to have this done you should really consider it. Leaving it alone will only make things worse and you could start to experience bone loss which creates loose teeth. Then you'll have an even bigger problem on your hands. The procedure is not painful b/c you are numb in the areas that it is being done. The novacaine shot is the worst part of it all and it only lasts for a few seconds.

Even after proper regular brusing some yellowish hard material get deposited near roots of teeth over the time. This is also known as tarter %26amp; it weakens the gums %26amp; teeth so to remove it scaling is done ,it is not painful. It can be repeated every 6 months if one has the tendency of tarter on their teeth.
Reply:Scaling refers to cleaning the teeth. More than likely they will numb your gums and scale around the area of the tooth with plaque and tartar build-up. You will be sore, but glad you did this.

This is normally for people who have not had a cleaning in some time and have alot if plaque build up on their teeth.
Reply:It is mechanical cleaning of teeth by a dentist.

In Case plaque deposit is so Strong on teeth that it can not be removed by normal brushing, it must be got removed through a dentist.

The process is not painful as just the upper layer of teeth is scrubbed to get rid of the solid deposit over teeth.

It must be got done once or twice an year if one is not regular in brushing the teeth.
Reply:Scaling is the term used for the procedure the hygienist preforms with the use of different instruments to "clean" the teeth and tissue of calculus, tartar and stains above and below the gum line. Everyone who gets their teeth cleaned has some scaling done to the teeth and it's not painful at all. It's also the name of the "instruments" used to scrape the debris from the teeth or preform this procedure.

Additional information:

Root planning and scaling are two similar but separate procedures; scaling is done on any and every patient who comes in for a typical cleaning at the dental office, Root planning is done when patients have the potential of developing or have developed periodontal disease and have deep pockets of unattached tissue registering deeper than 4mm that require debridement of these pockets. Both, as I said before are different as the scaling is done to the outer tooth structure and just below the gum line approximately 1-3 mm to where the tissue attachment starts, where as the root planning is much deeper unattached tissue along the root of the tooth anywhere from 4-10 mm (the length of a typical root of a tooth) and the patient is usually always given an anesthetic for this as it's usually accomplished with seperate visits and completed in quadrants. Although most dentist will almost always refer a patient to a periodontist for this treatment.
