I am an RDH in CA and am very interested in owning the hygiene department in our dental practice.?

I feel this would be advantageous to my employer because I would cover costs for equipment, supplies, wages and it would also free up 2 more operatories for her to use. I am planning on making our office next door the hygiene office. I am curious if this can legally be done in CA. I have been told that it might work if I am part of a corporation and the dentist is still in charge of the practice and makes decisions on dental procedures. I am wondering if anyone has any feedback for me .

Check out Section 1774 in the California dental code: http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/displa...

It appears you can actually establish an independent practice as a dental hygienist, but you need to take some sort of class first. (The courses mandated by the Health Manpower Pilot Project).

Best of luck to you in establishing your own practice!
